What this usually means
If VoiceTypr launches but does not hear you, the issue is usually one of these:
- Windows microphone permission is off
- the wrong input device is selected
- another app is using the microphone
- desktop app microphone access is disabled
Step 1: Check Windows microphone permissions
Windows 11
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone
- Turn on Microphone access
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone
Windows 10
- Open Settings → Privacy → Microphone
- Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone
- Turn on desktop app microphone access if shown
Step 2: Check the selected input device
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar
- Open Sound settings
- Confirm the correct microphone is selected
- Speak and verify the input level moves
Step 3: Close conflicting apps
Common conflicts:
- Zoom
- Teams
- OBS
- browser tabs using Meet or voice recording
- other dictation or transcription apps
Close them fully, then test VoiceTypr again.
Step 4: Relaunch VoiceTypr
If you changed privacy settings while VoiceTypr was open:
- Quit VoiceTypr
- Reopen it
- Trigger a short dictation test
Step 5: Test in a simple app first
Before testing in Cursor or a browser:
- Open Notepad
- Start VoiceTypr
- Speak one short sentence
- Release and see if the app responds
If it works there but not elsewhere, the real issue is likely hotkeys or paste permissions, not the microphone itself.
If it still does not work
