# Install Voicetypr on Windows 10 and 11

Step-by-step install guide for Voicetypr on Windows 10 or Windows 11, including SmartScreen, microphone access, and first-launch setup.

## Before you start

Voicetypr supports:

- Windows 10

- Windows 11

- built-in or external microphones

- CPU-only and GPU-accelerated transcription

You do not need a Microsoft account to install Voicetypr.

## Download the installer

- Go to [voicetypr.com/download](https://voicetypr.com/download)

- Click Windows

- Wait for the .exe installer to download into Downloads

If your browser warns you about the file, keep the download and run it manually from your Downloads folder.

## Run the installer

- Double-click the .exe installer

- If Windows SmartScreen appears, click More info

- Click Run anyway

- Follow the setup steps

- Finish the install and launch Voicetypr

## Windows 10 setup

### Microphone permissions on Windows 10

- Open Settings → Privacy → Microphone

- Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone

- If shown, turn on desktop app microphone access too

- Launch Voicetypr and test a recording

### If the hotkey does not fire everywhere

Some protected or elevated apps may ignore global hooks unless Voicetypr is also elevated.

- Close Voicetypr

- Right-click the Voicetypr shortcut

- Choose Run as administrator

- Test the hotkey again in the app that was failing

## Windows 11 setup

### Microphone permissions on Windows 11

- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone

- Turn on Microphone access

- Turn on Let apps access your microphone

- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone

- Launch Voicetypr and test a recording

### Extra Windows 11 note

On some Windows 11 machines, security prompts appear under **Privacy & security** instead of the older Windows 10 layout. The labels are similar, but the menu path is slightly different.

## First launch checklist

After install, confirm:

- the app opens without SmartScreen blocking it

- microphone access is enabled

- the hotkey opens the dictation HUD

- text pastes into a normal app like Notepad, Gmail, or Cursor

## If Voicetypr opens but does not transcribe

Check these in order:

- Is the correct microphone selected?

- Is Windows microphone access enabled?

- Is another app exclusively holding the microphone?

- Did you deny permission the first time and forget to re-enable it?

## If Voicetypr transcribes but does not paste

This usually means one of these:

- the target app is blocking input hooks

- the target app is running elevated while Voicetypr is not

- the chosen hotkey conflicts with another shortcut

Try:

- testing in Notepad first

- switching the hotkey

- running Voicetypr as administrator once to compare behavior

## Windows 10 vs Windows 11 differences

The install flow is almost identical. The main differences are:

- Settings path for microphone permissions

- how SmartScreen text is worded

- visual layout of the Settings panels

If you follow the correct permission path for your Windows version, the rest is the same.
