# Hotkeys

Customize Voicetypr's hotkeys. Tap to toggle, hold to record, and bind to any key combination.

Voicetypr's hotkey is how you trigger dictation without leaving the app you're working in.

## Default Hotkeys

| Platform | Default | Behavior |
| --- | --- | --- |
| macOS | ⌘ + Shift + Space | Hold to record, release to stop |
| Windows | Ctrl + Shift + Space | Hold to record, release to stop |

## Changing Your Hotkey

- Open Voicetypr settings

- Click Hotkey

- Press your preferred combination

- Click Save

Good hotkey choices:

- Double-tap Ctrl — Easy to reach, won't conflict

- Fn + F12 — Unlikely used by other apps

- Right Option (Mac) — Dedicated key, no conflicts

## Tap vs Hold

### Hold to Record (Default)

- Press and hold while speaking

- Release to stop and paste text

- Best for: Short bursts, precise control

### Tap to Toggle

- Tap once to start recording

- Tap again to stop

- Best for: Long-form writing, walking around

To switch modes: **Settings > Hotkey > Toggle mode**

## Global Hotkeys

Voicetypr registers your hotkey at the system level, so it works in any app:

- ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor

- VS Code, JetBrains, Vim

- Gmail, Notion, Slack

- Figma, Linear, Jira

If your hotkey doesn't work in a specific app, try running Voicetypr as administrator (Windows) or check Accessibility permissions (Mac).
